Perhaps the best books on clinical disorders of acid-base and electrolyte metabolism have appeared in the last 15 years. As a group, they have drawn together data from a widely dispersed research literature, used them to document fairly precise sequences of pathophysiology, and applied these to both qualitative and quantitative descriptions of clinical disorders and approaches to therapy . . . sometimes in surprisingly thin volumes. In general, they have been received with enthusiasm and gratitude by students, who quickly appreciate that it is much easier to remember what happens if one has some idea of why it happens. The
