The kidney is important in the metabolism and excretion of many pharmacologic agents; some medications cause and others ameliorate renal disease. All of these relationships are explored in this monograph. After succinct reviews of the assessment of renal function and the pharmacokinetics of the renal handling of drugs, Dr. Bennett and coworkers' "Guidelines for Drug Therapy in Renal Failure" (Ann Intern Med. 1977;86:754-83) is reprinted, with minor modifications. These periodically updated guidelines provide useful suggestions for modifying drug therapy in the patient with renal failure, but the extensive pertinent references accompanying the original article are unfortunately omitted from this book.
