The concept of "total cancer care" by a compassionate health care team is strongly espoused by Dr. Lokich, the editor and major contributor to this truly different book on cancer patient management. Rather than following the standard approach of discussing each of the various malignancies, Dr. Lokich has largely focused on the communication of the diagnosis and its implications to the patient and his family and the medical and psychosocial management of various problems related to the disease and its treatment. There are, to be sure, chapters on general concepts in cancer therapy (excellent), immunology (reasonable), chemotherapy and radiotherapy (weaker).
