Steady and substantial progress in expanding the knowledge of the HLA system justifies this new edition. Attention is called to the recent changes in nomenclature and symbolization needed to deal with the increasing complexity of HLA antigen categorization. Clinical applications are summarized in Chapters 9 and 10, which deal with transplantation, transfusion, pregnancy, disease association, paternity testing, and tissue classification. Recommended for all major clinical libraries and for the attention of hematologists, rheumatologists, clinical immunologists, and clinical geneticists not already familiar with the principles of HLA identification and classification.
