To the editor: We read with interest the letter "Simple Method for Passage of Small-Bore Nasogastric Feeding Catheter" in the October issue (1). Because a closed endoscopic biopsy forceps is not always readily available, we propose an alternative method.
A stainless steel arteriography wire guide 0.038 in. in diameter (Model SCF; Cook Incorporated, Bloomington, Indiana) can be easily obtained from a hospital radiology department. (Teflon-coated wires of similar gauge are less rigid and therefore much less effective.) The tip of the wire is lubricated with Surgilube (lubrication jelly). It is then threaded into the lumen of the nasogastric feeding tube.
