This short, provocative work addresses a topic of immense importance to modern medicine: the vital role of "affirmative emotions" in the human struggle against disease and disability. Cousins expands his ideas on the relevance of love, faith, hope, laughter, and the will to live to recovery from illness, as earlier expressed in a lay article published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
