To paraphrase recent "pop literature," Hugh Baron's monumental review could be subtitled "All you want to know about gastric secretion—and were afraid to ask!" The author has a long and intense interest in tests of gastric secretion and has made many personal contributions. Thus, 32 of his own first-authored publications, extending over 25 years, are cited, and the total of 1287 references are a "personal selection" from his own files. The work extends his "Quadrennial Review" from the 1970 World Congress of Gastroenterology (Scand J Gastroenterol. 1970;5[suppl 6]:9-46).
