Cytopathology is a field that has increased dramatically in scope and sophistication since its inception as a tool for screening for cervical cancer. Screening of exfoliated cells from a multitude of gynecologic and then nongynecologic sites was expanded by the addition of brushings and washings of areas previously approachable only by endoscopy. Now in the most dramatic movement, cytopathology has become a definitive diagnostic mode, with weight comparable to tissue diagnosis in many circumstances, particularly in conjunction with needle aspiration biopsies. Dr. Koss has pioneered this expansion.
