To the editor: Dr. Butler's article "Geriatrics and Internal Medicine" (1) excellently highlights many of the issues in the health care of older people and in the preparation of physicians to deliver this care. His comments are appropriately directed to internists, for it is in the practice of internal medicine that the growing number of older adults will have the greatest effect.
This effect, however, extends beyond clinical issues. We have found that experiences with older persons affect the specialty choices of medical students. We recently surveyed fourth-year students at two medical schools with regard to patient experiences and career
