Forty-four authors, each an acknowledged expert in his field, have collaborated to produce a valuable report on contemporary understanding of mechanisms involved in "metabolic" diseases. The emphasis on mechanism is so pervasive in these essays that the editors have elected to abandon the former title of the book, Duncan's Diseases of Metabolism.
The introductory section of the book (Part I: "Mechanisms of Metabolic Control") contains a review of recent work on gene structure and function, protein structure, inborn errors of metabolism, mechanisms of action of hormones, and a lucid account of carbohydrate, lipid, and protein interrelationships.
