This is a timely new text. There have been recent advances in pediatric liver disease that are worth reviewing. The pathogenesis of neonatal cholestasis, the characteristics of neonatal viral hepatitis, the clinical manifestations of Reye's syndrome and alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency, and the therapy of Wilson's disease are better understood now than they were a relatively few years ago. Moreover, because of the limited number of pediatric gastroenterologists, the internist with a subspecialty interest in gastroenterology often is asked to consult on difficult problems in pediatric liver disease.
