Hemoperfusion with Amberlite XAD-4 resin (X-R004 cartridge; Extracorporeal Medical Specialties, Inc., King of Prussia, Pennsylvania) (1) removes meprobamate from plasma and produces better drug clearance than does charcoal hemoperfusion (2). We report here two life-saving XAD-4 hemoperfusions in a patient with a massive meprobamate overdose in which the efficient calculated extraction of drug was confirmed by subsequent recovery of a large quantity of meprobamate from the used cartidges.
