In February 1980 the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) was published by the American Psychiatric Association, and in May 1980 there was a second printing. The DSM-III emerged from the work of The Task Force on Nomenclature and Statistics of the American Psychiatric Association, Robert L. Spitzer, M.D., Chairperson, appointed in 1974 by the Council on Research and Development of the American Psychiatric Association to look into a review of DSM-II. There were 19 persons on The Task Force on Nomenclature and Statistics; about 135 people in 19 advisory committees took part in
