Approximately one child in 600 has diabetes mellitus. Many die at an early age, making the disease the seventh most common cause of death in the young. It reduces life expectancy by one third, and frequently causes one or more of the feared chronic complications that may lead to blindness, renal failure, myocardial infarction, disabling neuropathy, or a combination of these. Available therapy does not permit us to attain the desired goal of sustained normoglycemia. Yet, impressive clinical and basic research designed to attain that objective is underway.
