The purpose of this book, as stated in the preface, is to meet the needs of three groups of readers: anyone interested in normal and pathologic red cells, biochemists who may have overlooked the red cell, and membranologists. None of the needs of these groups are fully met. The first chapter on the red cell membrane does not do justice to the major advances of the past few years. The regulation of intracellular pH is not discussed, nor are factors regulating cell hydration and cell volume, although a chapter is devoted to cation transport.
