Dietary deficiency of vitamin B12 in whites is rare and occurs only in vegans, who eat no food of animal origin (1). Vegetarians, although abstaining from meat and fish, do eat dairy products and drink milk but generally do not become deficient in vitamin B12 (2). However, a correlation has been shown between amount of animal products in the diet and serum vitamin B12 levels in Seventh-Day Adventists (3). In the following case vitamin B12 deficiency occurred in a vegetarian who further restricted his intake of vitamin B12 by a self-imposed low-cholesterol diet.
