A growing fraction of Americans suffer from the diseases and disabilities of aging. The professional and economic problems of providing them with adequate care will need close attention if solutions to these problems are to be found. The American College of Physicians, with financial support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has helped to bring some of these problems to clear focus by sponsoring a symposium, "The Changing Needs of Nursing Home Care," held in Washington, D.C., early in June of last year.
