In our present society, comprehensive health care of women is not limited to obstetrics and gynecology in their narrow sense but has much wider implications. The practicing physician has to be familiar not only with the medical aspects of the speciality, but with social, psychological, moral, and legal aspects as well. Issues such as abortion, sterilization, adoption, in-vitro fertilization, and embryo transfer are not unusual problems the physician has to respond to. The amount of new information gained in the last 5 years is considerable and growing rapidly.
