The clinical features of cluster headache have been recognized by successive generations of physicians. The whole topic has been obscured by a diversity of nomenclature as well as a number of proposed causes and suggested therapies. Thus terminology has included "red migraine" (von Mollendorf): erythroprosopalgia (Bing); ciliary; migrainous neuralgia (Harris); histaminic cephalgia (Horton); petrosal neuralgia (Gardner and associates); and "a peculiar variety of headache" (Symones). The clinical features of the headaches described under these designations were all similar and no clear distinction could be drawn among them.
