To the editor: In enclosed spaces containing vegetative matter (a farm silo, for example) considerable amounts of methane and carbon dioxide accumulate, with little or no oxygen. This condition can be a serious hazard to humans who work in or who accidentally fall into such an environment.
A 10-year-old boy was dumping grass clippings down a pipe (14-in. diameter) leading to a larger underground stone-lined abandoned cesspool. The family had been dumping grass clippings, leaves, and branches into this chamber for several years. The boy dropped the grass catcher into the hole, placed a ladder down the access pipe, and
