In the foreword to the first volume of Clinics in Diagnostic Ultrasound, which appeared in 1979, the editors stated that their aim was to present a series of authoritative review articles from centers that are very active in ultrasound. The 13 chapters and five case studies included in Volume 4 are by 23 contributors who are well-qualified to review two-dimensional echocardiography. The initial chapters describing quantitative measurements and physiologic and technical factors influencing these measurements present what has been learned from M-mode rather than two-dimensional studies.
