Medical augerers have used examination of the urine as one of their major tools for centuries. Before the advent of the needle biopsy of the kidney, the urinary sediment was the only ready access to evaluation of disease of the kidney and collecting system. Although exfoliative cytology of the urine has been useful for evaluating of neoplastic diseases of the collecting system, a broader application to the medical diseases of the kidney has not been widely used.
