Consultation on nonmedical patients is an important part of the role of general internists and subspecialists. Residency programs are increasingly providing separate rotations on general medical consultation services to specifically provide training in medical problems of patients on nonmedical services.
The bibliography provides a literature base for physicians interested in this area of consultation. The references encompass medical problems that are not directly related to the primary reason for admission to the surgical service. Most citations focus on the assessment of the risk posed by medical problems for planned surgical procedures and on the interrelations between medical and surgical problems.
