Many persons have looked for but not found a concise statement of the theoretical basis, principles, philosophy, and content of family medicine. Ian McWhinney has travelled far towards defining family medicine, both for those who are skeptical and for those who are sympathetic to the concept. His book will find wide use as an introductory text for residents in family practice, and will serve as an anchor for them as they are buffeted by the cynicism they always encounter on other services during their training.
The most important and useful parts are in the first two thirds of the text.
