To the editor: Although I am pleased with the renewed interest in research in medical education, as reflected by the recent editorial by Platt (1) and the letter by Hooper and associates (2), I am distressed by the order of the guidelines published by Hooper and associates.
In the last 15 years I have been impressed by how often medical mysteries and referral diagnostic problems are solved by simply taking a "complete history" in ignorance of the referring clinician's diagnosis. Similarly, I have been impressed by how often clinicians do not solve these problems and mysteries when a perfunctory history
