Every now and then in the literature of medicine, a text appears that seems certain to become a tradition, if not a classic. The Smith/Thier treatise on pathophysiology is, I believe, such a text. It is to be the first volume in a proposed International Textbook of Medicine triology. The second volume is the text on infectious diseases edited by Braude, Davis, and Fierer. The third is the Cecil Textbook of Medicine.
An authoritative, complete, and up-to-date textbook of pathophysiology has long been needed. This discipline, as the authors emphasize, is central to the intelligent study of human disease. The
