The American Medical Association's concern for problems of drug misuse and abuse, and the physician's increasing role in drug abuse treatment, have resulted in the AMA's publishing a book dealing with the causes, incidence, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of drug abuse. The author credits the conception of the book to Dr. Emanuel M. Steindler, Director of the AMA Department of Mental Health, and acknowledges the contributions of many persons, particularly Drs.
