To the editor: I have just read the article on involuntary weight loss (1), and I am not certain I understand why it was published. Those of us in practice are well aware of the authors' conclusion that patients with weight loss without an apparent cause need to be evaluated because most do have serious problems, both medical as well as psychiatric (if they can actually be distinguished). Because these authors concluded that "many clinicians may still wish to do screening laboratory tests in all patients with weight loss rather than only in those with a screening score of 8
