Provides the first-year medical student with background in pulmonary physiology needed for an understanding of clinical problems. Eleven chapters on function and structure of the respiratory system, mechanisms of breathing, alveolar ventilation, blood flow to the lung, ventilation-perfusion relationships and hypoxia, diffusion of gases, transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, regulation of acid-base status, control of breathing, nonrespiratory functions of the lung, and the respiratory system under stress. Thirty-seven study questions are included.
