Serum progesterone levels are often low during the menstrual cycles of adolescents. Columnar epithelium is exposed on the portio vaginalis of the cervix. These characteristics may enhance the virulence of genital infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Similar mechanisms may contribute to the propensity of adolescents for toxic shock syndrome.
