Staphylococcus aureus strains recovered from patients with toxic shock syndrome were examined for their ability to produce epidermal toxin. Seventy-three percent of 52 strains elaborated the toxin whereas only 18% of 106 control strains did so. There was no significant difference in the hemolysin patterns shown by the two groups of organisms.
