To the editor: I read with alarm the "Perspective" article by Cummings and Mehnert (1) on the challenge to MEDLINE implemented by Excerpta Medica. I for one must register my support for the continued appropriations by Congress to the National Library of Medicine and its on-line database, MEDLINE.
Over the past 3 years (1979 to 1981), I have completed a total of 950 computer searches on various databases, with MEDLINE accounting for 654 of these searches. The average time spent on a search for all 3 years combined was 8.6 minutes (for all databases used). Using the current fee of
