The first edition of this text was published in 1941. In the ensuing 40 years there have been dramatic changes in our knowledge of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of infectious diseases. There also have been significant changes in the availability of good textbooks on the subject. Although the Wehrle and Top book is good, and is a reasonable addition to the library of the infectious diseases specialist, it cannot be recommended for inclusion in the library of the medical student, resident, general internist, or other noninfectious diseases subspecialist. There are many other better textbooks on the subject. I prefer
