There was a time when the only comprehensive source of information on infectious diseases in adults was a section in the standard textbooks of medicine, supplemented by sections on antimicrobial therapy in texts on pharmacology. These sources still remain exceedingly valuable and, in my view, should be the first places to seek definitive information. However, looking at my shelves I can rapidly identify 12 excellent books on infectious diseases published within the past 5 years. Seven of these were published between 1980 and 1982. Thus, this new book will have to compete with comprehensive books on infectious diseases and more
