Gastric cancer continues to be the most important cancer in Japan. Mass screening in that country has resulted in earlier detection and substantially higher cure rates than in most other areas of the world. The gastrocamera, fiberoptic endoscopy with biopsy and cytology, and new techniques of double contrast radiography have been responsible for earlier diagnosis of this disease. Early gastric cancer is defined as cancer than is limited to the mucosa and submucosa.
