Nephrology and medical oncology developed in the last 20 years with little communication between the two fields. Major advances in understanding tumor biology have been matched by increased knowledge of the renal functional abnormalities resulting from immunologic, infectious, vascular, mechanical, or metabolic injury. The concurrent development of chemotherapeutic regimens and dialysis and transplantation provides therapeutic choices for previously fatal diseases. There is increasing awareness that the cancer patient as an immunosuppressed patient is particularly susceptible to renal injury either directly due to the tumor or indirectly as a result of vigorous treatment of the primary disease.
