In a time of sky-rocketing textbook costs, the concept of a concise, readable, and inexpensive reference book is appealing to a busy practitioner. However, after careful perusal I am not sure at whom this book is targeted. Part of this uneasiness stems from semantic problems inherent in the translation of the book from Spanish by a physician who is not a gastroenterologist. An effort was made to use idiomatic English, resulting in terms such as "hydroelectrolytic effects of diarrhea" instead of "fluid and electrolyte effects of diarrhea." These translation problems detract from the usefulness of this book for medical students
