An inaugural volume of a series devoted to rheumatology, The Kidney and Rheumatic Disease attempts to integrate new information derived from immunologic and histopathologic studies with the pathogenesis and clinical features of renal injury in rheumatic diseases. A major portion of the volume is devoted to systemic lupus erythematosus as a disease spanning subspecialty areas; less space is given to systemic vasculitides, systemic sclerosis, and gout. In addition, there is a useful discussion of some common therapeutic agents used in rheumatoid arthritis and closely related entities and their adverse effects on the kidney.
