In approaching the task of emphasizing "clinically relevant new material without ignoring the basic physiologic background data which are essential for its understanding," the editors, experienced clinicians and teachers, are aided by ten other contributing authors. The 24 chapters are grouped into three sections. The 8 chapters of the first section provide succinct explanations of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, accompanied by well-chosen graphs and illustrations.
The next five chapters review diagnostic methods including chest radiology, pulmonary function testing, examination of sputum and pleural fluid, bronchoscopy, and lung biopsy techniques. Especially welcome is a chapter on exercise
