Presentations were reviewed that helped us identify high-risk populations, ascertain what nutritional modifications may be beneficial, assess methods for improving compliance, and develop methods for measuring compliance. The high-risk populations include the progeny of known hypertensive persons, racial groups with an increased incidence of high blood pressure, diabetic patients, obese patients, the elderly, patients with elevated plasma cholesterol, patients with kidney disease, and persons economically deprived.
Nutrition modifications that should be considered include decreasing calories to normalize weight, decreasing sodium intake, and decreasing alcohol consumption. An increase in fiber content of the diet and adequate calcium intake should be encouraged.
