To the editor: Homosexual men are now recognized to be at increased risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, with 50% to 75% showing serologic evidence of previous or current infection (1-4). Most published data on this subject have resulted from studies in Europe or the United States. With the licensing of hepatitis B vaccine in Canada in October 1982, we considered it important to determine the prevalence of HBV infection in our population.
The study was done at the Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic, Edmonton, Alberta. Edmonton is a major urban center in western Canada with a population of approximately
