Thirteen authors associated with Emory University contributed to this book on the essentials of diagnosis and treatment in gastroenterology. The book is divided into two parts: the first part deals with gastrointestinal symptoms, the physical examination, and the interpretation of laboratory tests. The second part consists of a systematic description of diseases of the gut, the liver, and the pancreas. As stated by the editors, common disorders receive more attention than infrequent ones. However, functional colonic disturbances deserve only five pages, the same as the rare WDHA (watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria) syndrome. There are some neglected subjects: Cancers of
