The present controversy surrounding the treatment of mild hypertension has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) to issue guidelines for the management of this common condition (1). Debate (2-6) over the significance and treatment of mild hypertension has been generated by the publication of the results of several therapeutic trials on mild hypertension (7-11). The results of these trials must be carefully evaluated because of their potential implications. First, let us briefly review the WHO guidelines in order to put the subject of mild hypertension in proper perspective.
