He sat on the old porch in the straightbacked
cane-bottomed chair staring at his bare feet
big feet brown from the sun
tough enough to run on cinders
or a hard scrabble road
He could pick up a marble with his toes
and could even throw it in a general direction
but he couldn't shoot marbles with his toes
It was funny how you didn't think
of your toes until you stumped
a big one on a flint rock
or jammed the middle one
on the foot of the bed
in the middle of the night
when you had to
