Persons with a serious interest in gastroenterology should not be put off by the weight of this remarkable work (almost 10 pounds). Although heavy to handle, the book is a delight in every other aspect. Spiro's light touch, wit, perceptiveness of human nature, and provocative style, combined with a unique ability to turn a neat phrase, enliven even the most mundane topic. The book is never dull. Moreover, it is truly designed primarily for the practicing gastroenterologist, a fact that is apparent from beginning to end, reflecting the author's extensive clinical experience.
