To the editor: A popular new housestaff rotation system is making a major change in the way that doctors care for hospitalized patients and teach housestaff, but the change has seemingly gone unnoticed, perhaps because the system is as yet unnamed.
The belief that long hours and many chores interfere with housestaff education has led to liberalization of working hours and responsibilities. However, each attending physician still has had all of his patients cared for by a single housestaff team, until recently, when it was noticed that this sometimes led to unequal work loads and interference with time-off schedules.
