I cooked the stew, wherein I sit
It is not after all my fire, my pot—
But mine became the various ingredients
(I know because I won them each, hard earned,
and brought them home for use in turn.)
Brightly colored substrate, skillful culinary technique
Stirred, in the first person, swimming from within.
And what if there was no prescribed recipe—
What if no book of rigor presided at the mixing?
Who was to say how much of this, how much of that?
Who knows (even now) what really was
In the neat, labeled bottles
Whether each made a difference
