I approached this book with a particular interest in evaluating its usefulness for internists and family physicians. The first chapter, on the anatomy and pathology of the lumbar spine, happily is not one of the tedious reviews of basic science that so often initiates a monograph on a clinical subject. This chapter is clinically oriented, lucid, and informative Line drawings, radiographs, computed tomographic scans, and myelograms are used to illustrate normal anatomy and that distorted by disease and to pinpoint spinal sites that generate pain. Thus the reader is given a clinican's view of these details.
