A new major textbook that, because of its title, may not get the attention from clinical students and physicians it should receive. The main focus is on function in normal humans but the fraction on pathophysiology of the main diseases and syndromes rivals the content of some books limited to pathophysiology. Many chapters include thoroughly discussed cases illustrating clinical correlations, set up in boxes distinct from the main text. Each chapter closes with a study outline of the preceding text and a carefully selected short list of classic but still relevant papers and contemporary additional readings.
