HARRY C. NOTTEBART JR., M.D.
To the editor: The recommendations of the Immunization Practices Advisory Committee for yellow fever immunization have recently been updated again (1). This vaccine is extremely safe, with perhaps fewer serious reactions than most vaccines, but I am surprised that few authorities mention that the yellow fever vaccine is probably contaminated with avian leukosis virus (2, 3). In fact, most authorities do not mention this (1, 4, 5). Considering the safety record of the yellow fever vaccine, the presence of this other virus is apparently not significant, but this information should be provided to those who administer this vaccine.
